For Good and Evil: The Impact of Taxes on the Course of Civilization
Apr 4th, 2010 | By Charles L. Stanley CFP® ChFC® AIF® | Category: Book ReviewsThis book was copyrighted in 1993 but couldn’t be more contemporary. Adams gives us a tour of taxation in world history and its impact on civilization. Good tax policy causes societies to prosper and grow, bad tax policy brings down civilizations. It happens over and over. It would be wonderful if we could learn from this history and establish healthy tax policy and prosper under it. I consider this a “must read” for liberty loving people.
“For Good and Evil is sad testimony to how governments of the world cannot be made to understand that there is something between taking and being given. They cannot get wealthy just grabbing it. They cannot make wealth by just handing it out. But governments – as witnessed by their tax policies through history – will not learn this. Well, we must keep hammering away at their thick heads, and For Good and Evil is a 9-pound sledge.”
- P.J. O’Rourke
“Governments willfully ignore the lessons of tax history – less is more, or more accurately, lower taxes bring in more tax revenue. Too often, governments see people the way criminals do – as victims to be mugged. Adams’ book will be a powerful antidote to this tendency. In a democracy, an informed public will ultimately prevail. Adams not only informs us – he arouses us!”
